The intention of writing The Event was to create a Christmas song. Not something mawkish, but something that spoke to the real nature of Christmas, both religious and secular, historical and modern. Christmas as the idea of the event of Christ’s birth. The Parousia, the arrival of Christ in the world as a promise to deliver justice in a world in which it is lacking. The idea of Christmas a celebration in the harsh, unforgiving depths of winter. Christmas as the idea of being surrounded by friends and family, despite it’s adoption as an exercise in materialism. And above all, the idea that this event is meant to bring peace on earth, for all mankind. Hopefully you can hear these themes being indelicately tied together in the song. Or perhaps my intention was just to make a song with two minutes of brutal noise followed by a slamming bassline in the tradition of the best Christmas songs. Maybe Christmas can be all of these things.
